LIS 518- Literature & Media for Young Adults
What did I learn?
This course explored a diverse range of literary genres, formats, and voices that reflect adolescents' developmental, cultural, and social experiences. Emphasis was placed on evaluating literature for quality, relevance, and inclusivity, and understanding how these materials support identity formation, empathy, and critical thinking. The course also integrated principles from YALSA’s (Young Adult Library Services Association) Teen Services Competencies, including cultural responsiveness, equity of access, and the creation of developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Through this study, I am better prepared to curate collections, facilitate discussions, and design programs that empower youth and foster lifelong literacy.
Why this is important?
This course deepened my understanding of adolescent literature as a tool for supporting identity development, empathy, and critical thinking. By exploring diverse genres and voices, I gained the skills to evaluate materials for quality and inclusivity, ensuring they reflect the developmental and cultural experiences of teens. Integrating YALSA’s Teen Services Competencies strengthened my ability to curate responsive collections, lead meaningful discussions, and design programs that promote equity, engagement, and lifelong literacy. This knowledge directly enhances my work in youth services and reinforces my commitment to empowering young people through literature and learning.
