LIS 519 Youth Programming

What did I learn?

LIS 519 introduced the principles and practices of designing and implementing programming for youth, with a focus on grades 7–12. In this course, I learned how library-based programs support adolescent learning, development, and engagement in both formal and informal settings. Emphasis was placed on understanding the unique needs of teens and how programming can foster personal growth, academic success, and community connection. Through the integration of YALSA’s Teen Services Competencies, I learned to:

  • Apply knowledge of Teen Growth and Development to create developmentally appropriate programs.
  • Build meaningful Interactions with Teens that support identity, self-concept, and positive relationships.
  • Plan and evaluate Learning Experiences that reflect teens’ interests and support lifelong learning.
  • Promote Youth Engagement and Leadership by involving teens in program design and decision-making.

Why this is important?

LIS 519 deepened my understanding of how intentional, developmentally appropriate programming can support adolescent learning, identity formation, and community connection. By integrating YALSA’s Teen Services Competencies, I gained practical tools to design flexible learning environments, foster meaningful interactions, and promote youth leadership. This knowledge is directly relevant to my work in youth services, where I strive to create inclusive programs that reflect teens’ interests, support their growth, and empower them to take an active role in shaping their library experiences. The course strengthened my ability to advocate for responsive, equity-driven programming that meets the evolving needs of young people.
